The highest-priority ATS keywords for RN resumes include: certifications (RN License, BLS, ACLS, PALS, CCRN, CEN), EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, Meditech), nursing specialties (ICU, ER, Med-Surg, Telemetry, Labor & Delivery), clinical skills (Patient Assessment, Medication Administration, IV Therapy, Wound Care), and compliance (HIPAA, Joint Commission, Infection Control). Always match keywords to the specific unit and patient population in the job description.

Hospital ATS platforms (Workday, Taleo, iCIMS, Oracle Recruiting) are often configured to filter for licensure state, specialty unit, certification acronyms, and named EHR systems. A resume that says "electronic health records" without naming Epic or Cerner may score lower than one with the exact platform name. Unit-specific keywords (NICU, Telemetry, PACU) are also filtered by nurse recruiters searching their ATS for specific department openings. Always use the exact specialty and system names the posting lists.

List all current, unexpired certifications that are relevant to the role. Include both the abbreviation and full name: "ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)." For specialty certifications (CCRN, CEN, CNOR), list them prominently in a Certifications section and repeat them in context within your experience bullets. ATS systems scan both sections. Expired certifications should not be listed unless you note your intent to renew.

Use a clean, single-column or two-column layout with clear section headings: Summary, Licensure & Certifications, Clinical Experience, Skills, and Education. Avoid tables or text boxes that ATS parsers misread. Name your EHR system in the Skills section AND in each relevant job experience bullet. For each position, include the unit type, bed count if relevant, patient-to-nurse ratio, and acuity level — these are context keywords that differentiate your resume in competitive markets.
